Through April 9, the design world can be seen around the northern Italian city, where the Milan Furniture Fair first opened its doors in 1961. Since then, the main event has spilled over into the wider city, with several design-related nerve centers springing up throughout Milan.
Salone del Mobile
The Salone del Mobile -- or Milan Furniture Fair -- is held at Fiera Milano in Rho on the outskirts of Milan. There are several exhibitions on site, including Euroluce, spanning almost 38,000 sq m, dedicated to the latest in lighting from 450 exhibitors, and SaloneSatellite, showcasing the work of upcoming designers since 1998. Then there's the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, dedicated to interior accessories, and Workplace3.0 for workspace furnishings. Finally, the Salone Internazionale del Mobile -- the oldest exhibition -- is split into three sections: Classic, Design and xLux.
La Triennale de Milano
The Milan institution, situated in the Palazzo dell'Arte, has also got in on the act, showing various design-related exhibitions at the time of the city's Furniture Fair. This year's offering includes an exhibition presenting the brand Abet Laminati, designed by Paola Navone, an exhibition celebrating traditional Korean craft, and another looking at design for kids.
Tortona Design District
More than 50 events are being held around the city's Via Tortona. This year, the BASE Milano cultural center will host a variety of exhibitions and projects themed on the nomadic lifestyle, including mobile and floating houses.
Superstudio's project for Milan Design Week -- The Superdesign Show -- has picked the theme "Time to Color" for 2017, with projects and installations from major designers, including Patricia Urquiola, Karim Rashid, Fabio Novembre and chef Davide Oldani.
Brera Design District
This year's Brera Design District program focuses on the fun side of design, inspired by Bruno Munari's claim that "designing is a game and playing is design."
Ventura Lambrate District
The underground tunnels of Milan Central Station, in the Ventura Lambrate neighborhood, will be taken over by the work of international designers.
