History of World Sauntering Day

WT Rabe came up with idea of World Sauntering Day in 1979 while working at the Grand Hotel on Michigan’s Mackinac Island. Rabe established the idea of this day to encourage people to slow down and take it easy in reaction to the growing popularity of the running fad in the United States around the 1970s.

Acknowledging the value of adopting a slower pace in the face of the dominant fast-paced way of life, Rabe instituted strolling rules for the celebration of this day. He urged people to stroll rather than hurry in order to unwind and savour the moment.
