Five-time champions Australia suffered a crushing 134-run defeat against South Africa in the ODI World Cup match at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Thursday. It was a forgettable match for Australia as they suffered their biggest defeat in terms of runs in World Cup history. It was a below-par show from the Australian batters at a tricky Lucknow surface and were bundled out for just 177 in 40.5 overs.

The Aussies looked unprepared for the Lucknow pitch as the fast bowlers failed to cause any trouble for Proteas opening duo Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma. On the other side, South Africa was right on the money with the new ball as Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada struck wickets in the powerplay to derail Australia’s 312-run chase early.

Meanwhile, Proteas opener Quinton de Kock continued his impressive form with the bat as he smashed his second successive century while a record-breaker from the last match Aiden Markram scored a fifty to steer South Africa to 311/7 against Australia.

The 30-year-old de Kock, who will retire from the format after the World Cup, oozed confidence as he fetched 109 off 106 balls with the help of eight boundaries and five maximums, while Markram smashed 56 off 44 to help South Africa post the highest ODI total in Lucknow.

De Kock paced his innings well and troubled the Australian bowling attack, which cut a sorry figure, on a difficult Ekana pitch. Off-spinner Glenn Maxwell (2/34) was their most successful bowler while the others managed to get some wickets at the fag end of the innings.

For Australia, Marnus Labuschagne was the top-scorer with 46-run knock off 76 balls.
