Diwali Muhurat Trading: Even as Diwali 2023 is just around the corner, investors also have a special occasion muhurat trading on this festival day to mark the beginning of the new Hindu calendar year Samvat 2080. The customary muhurat trading session in the stock market takes place for an hour in the evening on Diwali — this year on November 12 between 6:15 pm and 7:15 pm, where investors can buy or sell shares in a usual manner. Here is how the previous 5 muhurat trading sessions performed and what is expected this year.

Muhurat Trading 2018: During this trading session, the benchmark indices opened on a bullish note. During the session, they shed some ground on profit-booking. However, the BSE Sensex managed to settle 245.77 points or 0.70 per cent higher at 35,237.98. The Nifty, after crossing the 10,600-mark during the early session, settled 68.40 points or 0.67 per cent higher at 10,598.40.

Moreover, in the past 15 muhurat trading sessions between 2008 and 2022, 12 closed in the green. Only 3 closed in the red — 0.3 per cent fall in 2012, 0.04 per cent slid in 2016, and 0.6 per cent drop in 2017.
Muhurat Trading 2023: Timings and What’s Expected
This year, leading stock exchanges BSE and NSE will host the one-hour special Muhurat Trading session on November 12 between 6 pm and 7.15 pm, which includes a 15-minute pre-market session.
The customary special session would mark the start of Samvat 2080 according to the Hindu calendar year.
The stock market will open for an hour for Diwali muhurat trading on November 12 at 6:15 pm and will end after one hour at 7:15 pm. However, the pre-open market session will take place between 6:00 pm and 6:08 pm on the BSE and NSE.
Matching timings on the muhurat trading session will be from 6:08 pm to 6:15 pm. Trade modification in the call auction will end at 7:40 PM. All trades executed at the Indian stock market in Diwali 2023 muhurat trading session shall result in a settlement obligation.
On the outlook for the Samvat 2080, Sunil Nyati, managing director of Swastika Investmart, said, “With the Indian elections looming and an impending peak in the interest rate environment in the US, the outlook for the Indian equity markets is positive. It is expected that gold and equities will both perform well in the coming months, with gold that might further benefit from the anticipated economic slowdown in the US in 2024.”
He said his preferred choice for investment leans heavily toward Indian equities as the favoured asset class. “The Indian equity markets are poised to outshine not only gold but also other global markets.”
