Sonakshi Sinha has been actively advocating gender equality for quite some time now and believes that her latest film Akira is going to set new benchmark in terms of portrayal of women in Bollywood.
The actress was in the town to promote the film and while answering to News18, said, "Actresses in Bollywood have not been given a chance to do much. Hopefully, Akira will lift up the barriers for women to do a lot more action in Hindi films."
Commenting upon the social media campaign of Akira #FightLikeAGirl, Sonakshi said, "The tag says it all. Women now don't need anybody’s validation for anything. We are strong and the world knows it, be it going into an untapped genre of film or winning medals in Olympics, we have done it all."
The actress feels that an actress doing an action film should not be seen differently as it is their job to deliver in every genre. “Why should it make you raise your eyebrows? No one ever uses the term 'male oriented action film' then why there is so much amusement on a 'female oriented' action film?"
According to her, Akira should be taken as a regular action packed thriller with an impressive storyline.
Born and brought up in a ‘feminist’ family it was a challenge for Sonakshi to get into the skin of Akira. "Akira was a very difficult character for me as we both are poles apart. Getting those raw emotions and anger onscreen was a challenge that I took up, otherwise in real life I can't even imagine being in Akira's circumstances. "
After doing mainstream films like Dabangg and Rowdy Rathore, is she reinventing herself with Akira? The actress replies, “Akira came to me at a point when I was looking at doing something different. I have moved in that direction now as it is the need of the hour."
The actress feels that Bollywood is currently undergoing a shift where audience expect different content from the filmmakers. Therefore, filmmakers and actors are doing everything in their reach to deliver something new every time.
On the current interest of big production houses towards digital medium, the actress expressed her eagerness in being a part of web someday. "I strongly believe we live in a digital world. I am always open to do a mini web-series if something interesting comes my way."
Termed as a quintessential Indian heroine right from the beginning of her career, the actress is proud of her image. She says, "It feels great when people pass me that compliment. I can do films like Akira while remaining a quintessential Indian heroine. "
Adding further, Sonakshi, who will be seen as an angry, no nonsense girl in Akira, said, " It's good when people start giving you tags like Angry Young Woman for a character that is so different from the real you. As an actor I feel accomplished as my hard work has comes across the way I wanted it."

Sinha has always been an advocate of positive body image and is known for a much relatable physique. About the body standards in the industry the actress said, "I don't pay much attention to how the typical standards want to measure me. I have always portrayed a healthy body image and will continue to do so no matter what people write about me."
Although the actress feels that one remains to be fit. "Health is important. My size or my weight has not affected my work and I want girls to understand that you are not defined by your body but your dedication and hard work. Remain fit but never give in to the societal pressure to look a certain way."
