Madame Web, the latest addition to Sony’s Spider-Man universe, has captivated audiences with its unique take on the Spider-Man mythos. Starring Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Cassie Webb, the film introduces a new chapter in the Spider-Verse, focusing on Cassie’s journey with her newfound precognitive abilities and her interactions with other key characters. One burning question that fans had was whether Spider-Man would make an appearance in the film. While Madame Web is not directly connected to any previous live-action incarnations of Spider-Man, it does offer a surprising connection to the iconic web-slinger.
Spoiler Alert! One subplot in the film revolves around Cassie’s coworker and friend, Ben Parker (Adam Scott), who helps her feel welcome in his family. In a heartwarming scene, Cassie’s visions prevent her from learning the name of Ben’s newborn nephew, hinting at a significant connection to the Spider-Man legacy.
In the film’s climactic third act, Cassie, along with Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney), Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced) and Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), must evade the deadly forces of Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim). The tension heightens when the girls seek refuge with Ben and Mary Parker, leading to Mary giving birth to a baby boy. While the film does not explicitly name the baby, it is revealed to be a young Peter Parker, adding a poignant tie to the Spider-Man lore.
Director S.J. Clarkson confirmed in a recent interview with ComicBook that Madame Web exists in a standalone world, separate from previous Spider-Man narratives. This approach allowed Clarkson to craft a fresh and original story without the constraints of fitting into an existing universe.
“It’s really the story of Madame Web,” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura explained. “We’re doing the origin story of Madame Web, and you come to understand how she becomes that person. So, I think that’ll be a really fresh new terrain for the fans.”
Madame Web is a compelling addition to the Spider-Man universe, offering a new perspective on familiar characters while introducing exciting new elements. The movie is currently being shown only at cinemas, offering viewers a chance to witness the charm of the Spider-Verse in a brand new way.
