Veteran filmmaker Mehul Kumar recently recalled an incident from the sets of Jung Baaz (1989) which left Govinda speechless. He said that Govinda had gifted a colourful shirt to Raaj Kumar after the late actor sarcastically said that he liked it. The next day, Raaj Kumar showed up on set with a handkerchief made from the same shirt and Govinda couldn’t react. While this story was known among the film circles, Mehul recently confirmed it for cinema fans.
In an interview with Bollywood Thikana, Mehul Kumar said, “Once Govinda wore quite a vibrant shirt to the set which Raaj Kumar liked. After he complimented the actor, Govinda didn’t get the sarcasm… so the next day, Govinda gifted him the same shirt which Raaj Kumar turned into a handkerchief the very next day on set and was using it to wipe off his hands and nose. Govinda couldn’t really react to it. I am sure he must have felt weird about it.”
Jung Baaz marked Govinda and Raaj Kumar’s second collaboration after the 1987 film Marte Dam Tak. Both actors played the leads in Mehul Kumar’s film. The veteran filmmaker also recalled that Raaj Kumar once said to him, “Mehul yeh (Govinda) humesha naachta hi rehta hai (Mehul, he is always dancing).” He added, “After hearing this from Raaj Kumar, I laughed and said, ‘He is a dancer’, so Raaj Kumar was like but ‘Why does he keep dancing even on the sets?’ He never said this before Govinda though.”
Raaj Kumar was among the finest actors in Bollywood, especially in the 80s. He was known for his stellar acting prowess as seen in films like Tirangaa, Pakeezah and Mother India among others. He was also known for his unpredictable temperament. The actor passed away on July 3, 1996, at the age of 69.
As for Govinda, while he may have stepped away from films since 2019, there was a time when audiences eagerly anticipated his new releases. During the 80s and 90s, Govinda was considered one of Bollywood’s leading actors. However, over time, his career trajectory began to decline. His last successful film at the box office was Partner, which came out in 2007.
