The South Indian film industry has been experiencing a remarkable surge in recent years, with several blockbuster hits captivating audiences not only within their respective states but also across the nation. Films like the Baahubali Franchise, RRR, Pushpa: The Rise, KGF Franchise and Salaar: Part 1 have not only shattered box office records but have also garnered widespread acclaim, earning recognition on a global scale. Naatu Naatu, a song from SS Rajamouli’s RRR, even secured an Academy Award for Best Song, further solidifying the industry’s prowess.
The year 2024 commenced with a thrilling clash at the box office, featuring highly anticipated South Indian films vying for audience attention. Many of these releases proved to be massive hits, captivating the masses with their compelling narratives and stellar performances. Now, as the industry continues to evolve, several of these films are set to make their digital premieres in the coming week.
Guntur Kaaram
One such film is Guntuar Kaaram, directed by Trivikram and starring Mahesh Babu in the lead role. Released during the Sankranti week in January, the film quickly garnered immense popularity and acclaim. With a stellar ensemble cast including Sreeleela, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Ramya Krishna and Jayaram, Guntuar Kaaram amassed an impressive Rs 172 crore worldwide. The film made its OTT debut on the streaming platform Netflix.
Ayalaan
Another notable release is Ayalaan, a science fiction thriller directed by R. Ravi Kumar and featuring Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role. Despite a slow start at the box office, the film gained momentum over time, drawing audiences with its gripping storyline and AR Rahman’s mesmerising music. Co-starring Rakulpreet Singh, Sharad Kelkar, Isha Koppikar, Karunakaran and Yogi Babu, Ayalaan is premiering digitally on Sun NXT.
Captain Miller
Captain Miller, starring Dhanush and directed by Arun Matheswaran, made its debut last month as a Sankranti special. Although it failed to make a significant impact upon its theatrical release, the film is now finding a new audience with its digital premiere on Amazon Prime in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
