While it may look very creative, sensual and beautifully done on the screen to us, sex scenes in films aren’t always easy to shoot. Though one may assume that it might have been shot like any other scene with a set of instructions given to the actors, the reality is slightly different. In fact, the sex scenes require a lot more coordination, creativity and planning for their seamless execution. Actors Glen Powell and Adria Arjona recently shared some interesting behind-the-scenes details of their work, especially regarding their physically intimate scenes, for the film Hit Man. While preparing for these scenes can be a complex process for most actors, Powell and Arjona took a unique approach to it.

According to Variety, the duo and their director used Pinterest to help plan the steamy bits of the film. To execute their intimate scenes, Arjona proposed the idea of creating a Pinterest board for Powell and the film’s director. On this board, they could share images from their favourite movies and art to get a sense of each other’s tastes.

“Everyone finds different things sensual,” Arjona explained. “It was interesting to see both of our perspectives, hone in and start molding it from that sense. It sparked conversations that you wouldn’t normally have, because we were in the process of creating it.”

Even Glen Powell found this approach beneficial too. “So often, sex scenes feel almost divorced from the movie, like a marketing play or it feels icky. In this movie, those scenes are crucial in the changing and seizing of identity. You have to see a guy who sees the world in such a binary, stale place checking logic at the door and becoming a whole new person. This romantic relationship is really expediting it. It’s the catalyst for everything,” he told Variety.

“It was beautiful and intentional. It didn’t feel like we were just doing sex scenes just to do sex scenes; it came from a creative place,” added Adria Arjona.

However, despite their efforts, not everything went as planned during the actual filming of the duo’s sex scenes. While in conversation with Variety, they recounted a mishap in a bathtub scene. They both ended up with painful rashes after a crew member mistakenly added some dishwashing soap to the tub. This led to a challenging situation where both actors had to endure discomfort while filming their intimate scenes.

“It looks so sexy, but we were both in so much pain. We would just die laughing of like, How much makeup do you have on your ass right now? I was like, So much it’s not even funny,” Arjona added.

The Richard Linklater directorial was released on 24 May 2024 and is available on Netflix.
