Janhvi Kapoor’s new film Roohi has released today amid uncertainty as to whether people are ready to go back to theatres yet. The rise in Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra does not bode well for any new film releasing in theatres.
Roohi was released on Thursday to cash in on the extended Shivratri weekend. Given the situation, the film has reportedly recorded a reasonably decent advance booking by selling approximately 16500 tickets at the national chains for its extended opening weekend, reported Pinkvilla. Approximately 75% to 80% of the tickets were sold for the opening day.
The advance booking picked up considerably on Wednesday. The approximate nett value of the ticket sales at three national chains (PVR, INOX and Cinepolis) is in the range of Rs 27 lakh to 29 lakhs. Out of this Rs 22 lakh plus is for the opening day.
PVR has sold approximately 9200 tickets for the four-day weekend, Inox has sold 4500 tickets and Cinepolis has recorded ticket sales of 2700. This initial response suggests that the film could do well on the opening day. The film also seems to generating positive reviews and word of mouth, which will encourage more people to catch it at a theatre.
Despite the Covid-19 risk, Janhvi has been promoting the film on ground and across cities. When asked why she is taking the risk, the 24-year-old said that she couldn’t possibly ask fans to watch the film at a theatre by staying at home herself.
After several months of theatres being shut, various state governments gradually allowed cinemas to open since October, with a set of SOPs in place. Big budget films, being apprehensive about footfalls, have finally started announcing their release dates this year.
