Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, who were together for 15 years, announced their divorce in 2021. Despite their separation, both Aamir and Kiran share an amicable bond, and that was evident when Kiran turned up for Ira Khan’s wedding festivities. In a recent interview, the filmmaker, who is currently awaiting the release of her next Laapataa Ladies, opened up on her bond with her ex-husband and also emphasised that their bond goes ‘beyond marital relationship’.
While speaking with Connect FM Canada, Kiran shared that both of them share a strong creative bond. “It came naturally to us because we started off working together, and even after we became partners, we continued working together. We understand each other in a way that goes beyond just the marital relationship. We are creatively very close. We also share similar opinions on many issues.”
She further added, “We had a very familial, honest relationship. That’s something that you can’t erase, and you don’t want to, because that’s the basis for our relationship. We never even had any acrimonious fallouts or big fights. We just wanted to redefine our relationship. We wanted to remain a family but not be married. So we just made our own rules. I don’t think relationships can be given social tags. This just happens to be unusual for people—that two divorced individuals want to continue working together, live in the same building, have meals often, etc. I would not have been happy if the dissolution of our marriage had resulted in the end of our relationship.”
Laapataa Ladies is being produced by Aamir Khan’s production house. In the same interview, Kiran opened up about how Aamir takes her opinions on cinema very seriously. “He has sought my opinion on many occasions. I suppose since we think similarly on so many levels, I have also been able to influence him. Though he’s always been the person who follows his own path, he values my opinion quite a lot. And it’s nice to hear that.”
Aamir, one of the most respected and loved actors in the country, was married to Reena Dutta for 16 years, but the couple got divorced in 2002. Three years after his divorce from Reena Dutta, Aamir Khan married Kiran Rao on December 28, 2005. The couple had a private function for friends and family at Aamir’s farmhouse in Panchgani.
