The 70th National Film Awards were recently announced. At a press conference in New Delhi on August 16, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) declared the awards. The Best Marathi language film of the year has been won by Paresh Mokashi’s Vaalvi. One National Award has also been won by a Marathi documentary. The 2022 National Award for Best Arts/ Culture Film has been won by Varsa. The main sport of Kolhapur serves as the theme for this documentary. Sachin Balasaheb Suryawanshi is the writer, producer, and director of Varsa. By October 2024, President Draupadi Murmu will present the awards to the winner reportedly at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi. National awards is regarded as the greatest honour in the Indian cinema industry. The Kolhapur sports and art community is really happy and proud of this achievement. The arenas of male sports are still thriving in football-crazed Kolhapur. For the love of Shiva Raya alone, the male players and the elite group that produces them are risking their own money to save this game. Kolhapur served as the starting point for two years of research and filming for this movie.

From Shivaji Maharaj’s time martial arts are considered as masculine games. This method allowed Shivaji Maharaj to grow his empire. The sons of Shivaji Maharaj were skilled in sports geared towards men. Varsa demonstrates Kolhapur’s residents’ efforts to conserve their martial arts legacy. This 25-minute video features demonstrations of this sport along with conversations with coaches and athletes.

“I dedicate this award to the ancestors of Shiv Raya and all the athletes and trainees who have preserved this art of war,” Sachin Balasaheb Suryawanshi said in an interview. “Our children play foreign sports because they can pursue careers in those sports,” he stated. “There is no place for this sport in school athletics on our soil. The government should allow male sports in school athletics. This will ensure that Shiva Raya’s great legacy is preserved,” Sachin Suryawanshi expressed his wish.

For the past few years, Sachin Suryawanshi has been researching and studying sports involving men. The documentary, which will be viewed on TV soon, was made with more than Rs 3 lakh. Sachin encountered numerous challenges in producing this documentary. He didn’t give up and finished this documentary with his own dedication. In Bollywood, Sachin Suryawanshi has won the highest-regarded filmfare award twice, in 2019 for Soccer City and in 2022 for Varsa.
