Following the success of the Netflix movie Scoop, featuring Prince Andrew’s 2019 Newsnight interview about his connection with Jeffrey Epstein, rumours suggest that The Crown might make a comeback. As Scoop received praise from both critics and audiences, it’s speculated that the team behind The Crown aims to take advantage of their success. While the beloved period drama concluded its final season in December, plans are reportedly underway for a comeback, as a limited series or a film. The proposed storyline is said to explore the life of King Edward VII.
Edward was known for his charming personality, but he remained in the limelight for his alleged playboy image, leading to damaged relations with his mother, Queen Victoria. Allegedly, despite being married, Edward had 55 affairs, which might be the central theme in the upcoming adaption.
An insider told The Sun, “The consensus was that the royal drama seemed to wane the closer it came to modern day and retelling multiple stories that so many were familiar with. But Scoop showed that rather than doing this in a drawn-out, ten-part series, focussing instead on one moment in time seemed to hook people. If they can repeat that pattern by delivering prequels in a shorter form, they believe they may have come up with a winning formula for a new incarnation of The Crown.”
Similar to Prince Andrew, King Edward VII had a playboy image, both during his time as the Prince of Wales under his mother Queen Victoria and later as king from 1901 to 1910. He was frequently involved in scandal, majorly for his 55 extramarital affairs, including one with Alice Keppel, who is Queen Camilla’s great-great-great-grandmother. The former ruler also found himself entangled in legal trouble, as he had to appear as a witness in a case related to an illegal card game. Additionally, some rumours linked his son, the Duke of Clarence, to a notorious serial killer Jack, the Ripper.
As per reports, The Crown creators included flashbacks from King Edward VII’s era in a few episodes. The first two series about the British Royal Family featured the 1936 abdication of Edward VIII, while the fifth season explored the time of George V, during the 1917 Russian Revolution.
