Panaji: Amid threats and protests against Sanjay Leela Bhansali's controversy-ridden film Padmavati, director Nikkhil Advani said that it’s high time for all the people from the film fraternity to come together and do something in order to rectify a situation like this.
Advani, the director of films, such as Kal Ho Na Ho and D Day, said whatever is happening with Padmavati today could easily happen to some other film if adequate action is not be taken in time.
“I have been very fortunate that whenever I required support from my film industry they have come to my help. I think as an industry, whether it’s censorship or certification or piracy or shooting on locations, we must come together and we must do things together. And I think that is the biggest challenge one has to takeaway from a situation like we’re seeing today,” Advani told News18.com.
He added, “There are a lot of things that are not getting reported. Guilds (FTPGI) and the Associations (IMPPA) are talking with the studio about how we can help and what needs to be done. Because at the end of the day it can happen to any film so it has become important for us to sit across the table with whichever government and work out policy.
However, the director, who is planning to bring a historical show to TV after his POW: Bandi Yuddh Ke, said somewhere producers should also be more cautious when it comes to submitting their films to the CBFC as they often do it at the last moment.
“Of course people will turn around and make reasonable demands (to stop the release of a film) and get emotional about it. There’s a CBFC. It’s the job of the CBFC to make sure every filmmaker, whose film they have passed, nobody can question," he said.
He continued, “See our main issue is that we show our film to CBFC at the last moment. So now they have come up with their own time limit, which is shocking to a lot of producers because they are not completing the films till the very last moment even when most of them are in a position of completing a film five or six months in advance and waiting for the particular day to announce or release the film.”
Padmavati has been facing the wrath of various Rajput groups and political leaders, who have accused Bhansali of distorting history.
Many groups have been protesting amid rumors of a romantic dream sequence between Rajput queen Padmini and Alauddin Khilji. However, Bhansali said in an appeal that there was no dream sequence and it was all a rumour.
The movie stars Deepika Padukone as Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji.
