Taylor Swift kept her past relationships under wraps. However, a closer look at the lyrics of her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, screams insights into her relationship with ex-boyfriends Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy. Contrary to what fans expected, the album has more tracks about Swift’s romance with Healy instead of Alwyn, and her bonus track, The Black Dog, appears to be another addition to the list. Swifties have all the reasons to believe that the song’s subject is Healy.
The song’s second verse has Swift singing, “In The Black Dog, when someone plays The Starting Line / And you jump up, but she’s too young to know this song / That was intertwined in the magic fabric of our dreaming / Old habits die screaming.”
Soon after the lyrics were out, fans were quick enough to note that during the 1975’s concert in May last year, Healy covered The Starting Line’s “The Best of Me”. On the same day, reports circulated suggesting that Healy and Swift were dating as the former, while onstage, mentioned, “this one is about you. You know who you are. I love you.” Interestingly, two days after the concert, Swift reiterated the same lines during her Nashville Eras Tour concert. Healy had flown over 17 hours to witness Swift performing live on stage.
If this is not enough, Swift’s track The Black Dog also details her ex dating someone younger than her. It is certainly not just a coincidence that Healy not once, but twice, dated women younger than Swift. Post their breakup in June 2023, Healy began dating her 24-year-old ex-girlfriend Meredith Mickelson. However, that didn’t last long, as Healy’s romantic relationship began with 26-year-old model Gabbriette Bechtel in September 2023.
Notably, Swift and Healy stayed friends despite the end of their summer fling last year. People quoted a source as saying, “They have been friends for years and decided to just go back to being friends. Nothing complicated happened. It’s just life.” Capturing her feelings about Healy’s public display of his romance with the singer, Swift, in one of the verses, sings, “You said I needed a bravе man / Then proceeded to play him / Until I believed it too.”
In December 2023, reports surfaced claiming that Swift bought a house in North London. Earlier, as reported by Daily times, she and Alwyn were keen on buying a seven-bedroom mansion in the city’s Belsize Park before they decided to end the relationship, leading the pop sensation to buy a different property. One of the lines in the song, “now I wanna sell my house” could be a reference to the singer’s wish to cut all her ties with England. The usage of the word “the smoke” may also be a reference to London as it was nicknamed in the past.
