We give you a quick lowdown on the controversies former Bollywood actress has been embroiled in.

As Mamta Kulkarni and her Kenya-based husband Vicky Goswami come under the scanner of police and enforcement agencies in connection with a Rs.2,000-crore narcotics racket unearthed in Thane, we give you a quick lowdown on the controversies former Bollywood actress has been embroiled in.

At a time when Bollywood actresses were conscious of the kind of roles they were doing and the statement they were making, Mamta showed no qualms in taking a bold step and defied Bollywood norms. The actress went topless for a popular magazine cover in 1993. In addition to the criticism that she earned, many even protested against her.

Building connections with the underworld isn’t as easy as it might sound. Mamta tied the knot with underworld drug key player Vicky Goswami. Goswami was put behind the bars for illegal drug trafficking in 1997. As reports suggest, Mamta was regularly seen at Dubai jail. She married Vicky while he was in the jail.

Mamta hadn’t achieved huge success in Bollywood when filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi offered her a role in his film ‘China Gate’. However, the controversies that she was embroiled in initially, he took the decision to exclude her from the cast. But that couldn’t be done following the underworld threat calls that he received. Post the Box Office failure of his film, Mamta accused Santoshi of supposedly trying to make sexual advances to her and even held him culpable for chopping her scenes.

Mamta’s decision to wear a burqa during one of her appearances at the court too didn’t go down well with many. A morcha was carried out against her and she was held culpable for hurting Muslim sentiments by misusing the burqa. If reports are anything to go by, the actress also received death threats which went on until the Bombay High Court declared her innocent in January 2004.

When Mamta Kulkarni agreed to perform at a private event for a Bihar legislator, little did she know that it would put her into trouble, again. Since the legislator was nabbed in the Fodder Scam, she invited wrath from critics for being involved in his private ceremony.
