Excerpts from an exclusive interview to IBNLive.com...

On understanding onscreen character Tanuja Trivedi: When you enter realms (via characters) that you have never visited both physically and psychologically, you do get to understand certain personality and behavioral traits that are completely different from yours. When I got into the skin of the character Tanuja Trivedi, it did change me. It helped me become aware of those people who have extraordinary expectations from life, who look only for thrill and excitement and how disheartened they are with the institution of marriage, especially if they have chosen a partner who is diagonally opposite to them, which can get frustrating. Manu Sharma is just not like Tanu. Their personalities and ideologies are completely different. As a single woman, Tanu would just get up in the morning, take a bike ride and just followed her heart. Everyone knew her as the star of street. And now, she has restrictions to follow, a family to look after, a husband who has different expectations. Such things can turn any girl’s life upside down and make her just run away to a place where you nobody can find her. I completely understood what Tanu was undergoing. I was shattered after I completed ‘Queen’. While Tanuja Trivedi was an emotionally draining role, playing Datto was physically exhausting. Since Datto is an athlete, I had to run and jump around. Every character that I have performed has come with its share of challenges.

On targeting the right audience: Even though the sequel comes after a very long time since ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ released, we knew it would leave an impact. One doesn’t have to watch the first part to connect to what happens in the sequel. So kids who were just about 9/10 when the first part released, our now the viewers we are targeting. It is a family film. It is a story of a couple who is a mismatch.

On marrying her Mr Right: I would go for a man who has a personality that is entirely different from mine, because that would attract me. But the mismatch also becomes the struggle of a married life. After marriage, Manu can’t appreciate things that he had always loved about Tanu. He doesn’t want her to flirt with men, doesn’t want her to dance, doesn’t want her to attend family parties. The film only helps you understand these facets.

On Bollywood filmmakers adhering to stereotypes: Even though contemporary filmmakers don’t go by the off-screen image of an actor while offering certain roles, the practise isn’t non-existent. By and large, filmmakers looking at a family film will opt for actors who have a similar image in real life as well. That’s why actors stick to the image of a ‘family man’ or actresses want to be seen as ‘holier than thou’. Thankfully not all fall prey to such pre-conceived notions. Had this been the case, I wouldn’t have been offered ‘Queen’ ever. For before ‘Queen’, I played a superwoman in ‘Krrish 3’. After ‘Queen’ I was offered similar roles.

On playing a Ramjas college alumnus: I shot my part in Delhi University for 5-6 days. Despite looking different as Datto in the film, people would look at me and say, “Look at that girl. She looks so much like Kangana." I couldn’t interact much with Ramjas College, but met several Haryanvi athletes to do justice to my role.
