Will Smith To Play Iraq War Veteran In Action Thriller Sugar Bandits: Reports
The movie revolves around an Iraq War veteran, played by Will Smith, who joins forces with other veterans to take on the drug trade in Boston.

Actor Will Smith has added another exciting project to his already impressive list of upcoming films. He is set to star in the action-packed thriller titled Sugar Bandits, based on the book Devils in Exile by novelist and screenwriter Chuck Hogan. The movie revolves around an Iraq War veteran who joins forces with other veterans to take on the drug trade in Boston. Hogan, known for his work on The Town and The Strain, has written the screenplay, promising a gripping and intense story. Handling the film’s worldwide distribution rights are AGC International and CAA Media Finance, who will be showcasing the film to potential buyers at the upcoming EFM.

Smith will reportedly be producing the film alongside Jon Mone through Westbrook Studios, with Ryan Shimazaki overseeing the production. Stuart Ford will produce for AGC Studios, which is providing the financing, while Richard Abate will produce for 3 Arts Entertainment, informs Variety.

This project adds to Smith’s already long list of work, following his recent feature in Antoine Fuqua’s Emancipation, which made headlines with its deal with Apple TV+ at Cannes.

However, despite the hype, the film, Emancipation, failed to make a significant impact upon release. Smith is also involved in the upcoming fourth installment of the Bad Boys franchise and the sequel to the zombie hit I Am Legend, where he will reprise his role from the original 2007 film, using the alternate ending from the DVD where his character survives.

Originally announced in 2013 with Universal, Sugar Bandits has been in development for some time. This marks Smith’s first major movie announcement in the independent market since his notable moment at the Oscars ceremony in 2022. Smith is currently represented by CAA, while Hogan is represented by WME and 3 Arts Entertainment.

The 55-year-old American actor and rapper is also known for notable films like Men In Black series, Independence Day, Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness which earned him nominations for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

Smith received the Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for his role as Richard Williams in King Richard (2021).
