The recently released Malayalam film Premalu is receiving widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics, emerging as a box-office hit. In a significant development, the global distribution rights of the film have been secured by Yash Raj Films, one of India’s premier production houses.
Directed by Malayali filmmaker Girish AD, Premalu has been gaining traction since its release, captivating viewers with its unique storyline and stellar performances. Yash Raj Films’ acquisition of the UK and Europe distribution rights marks a milestone for the film, being the first non-Bollywood romantic comedy to achieve such recognition on this scale.
Released on February 9, Premalu quickly garnered positive reviews from audiences and expanded its theatrical presence from the second day onwards. In just nine days since its release, the film has amassed an impressive box-office collection of approximately Rs 27 crore.
The film features Naslen K Gafoor and Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles, supported by a talented ensemble cast including Sangeeth Prathap, Shyam Mohan, Akhila Bhargavan, Meenakshi Raveendran, Althaf Salim, Shameer Khan, Ranjith Narayan Kurup, AR Rajaganesh, KS Prasad and Mathew Thomas in a cameo appearance. Produced by Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran under the banner of Bhavana Studios, Premalu boasts music by Vishnu Vijay, cinematography by Ajmal Sabu and editing by Akash Joseph Varghese. With a modest budget of Rs 3 crore, the film hit the screens on February 9 to critical acclaim.
The film’s technical crew includes Xavier Richard as the production controller and Vinod Raveendran handling art direction. Costume design is credited to Dhanya Balakrishnan, while Ronex Xavier takes charge of makeup.
Premalu is a fine example of the growing recognition of regional cinema and highlights the potential for non-Bollywood films to make a significant impact on a global scale.
