Zico Apologises For Popularising TikTok Dance Challenges In K-Pop Industry
Zico recently expressed regret and apologised for unintentionally popularising the dance challenge among other K-pop idols.

TikTok challenges have become a sensation within the K-Pop industry as it offers fans a delightful peek into their favourite idols’ interactions and talents. It all began three years ago when South Korean rapper and singer Zico, renowned for his hit Any Song, initiated a dance choreography challenge with MAMAMOO’s Hwasa, igniting a wildfire of popularity. Since then, this trend has evolved into a significant marketing tool for the music industry.

However, Zico recently shared a moment of reflection on the show Point of Omniscient Interference, expressing regret for unintentionally initiating the challenge that now adds pressure on other idols. He humbly apologised, acknowledging that these challenges have disrupted the usual relaxation time between performances for artists. Furthermore, he recognised the burden placed on idols, who now feel compelled to meet and learn each other’s choreography, adding stress to their already demanding schedules.

He said, “I’ve been getting some criticism lately. It’s because challenges have become a mandatory part of promotional activities. Usually, singers rest or practice for their performance during the break. But nowadays, they have to meet up with their colleagues and film ‘challenge’ videos. They also have to know all the others’ choreography. So, I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for that,” according to Kareebo.

“I didn’t know that it would turn out to be successful. I thought I would just use it to promote my song. I didn’t know it would be established as part of the promotion culture. Whenever a new song comes out, my fellow singers called me and say, ‘Everyone is suffering because of the challenge you made.’ That’s why I’m apologising every time a new song comes out,” Zico added.

When Zico’s apology quote surfaced on Reddit, it stirred a variety of opinions among social media users. The individual who shared the post acknowledged the potential weight Zico might have felt for kick-starting the challenges.

Meanwhile, many saw the positive side of these challenges, claiming that some unknown tracks have now become popular, thanks to TikTok. On the flip side, some even expressed they enjoy seeing idols interact but others argued that it has now shifted from fun to a more serious tone. The intensified competition has led to idols receiving hate from rival fan groups. Whether or not Zico directly created the TikTok challenge, he played a major role in giving a boost to the trend.
