22 years after the iconic Gadar, Sunny Deol made a triumphant return as Tara Singh in Gadar 2, shattering box office records across India. The film went on to earn more than Rs 500 crore at the box office. With the success of the film, looks like making a sequel to earlier hits has again picked up steam in Hindi cinema. The latest addition to the list is Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer Khakee which was released in 2004 and was a hit at the box office.
Confirming the news exclusively to News18 Showsha, Aryeman Ramsay, son of late producer Keshu Ramsay (who produced the 2004 film) said, “Yes, we are planning a sequel to Khakee. The scripting is on and we have a basic plot in mind. We plan to go on floors with the film by next year as it will also mark 20 years of the original film which is still remembered and watched by the fans and audiences.”
Khakee revolved around an Indian police team’s mission to transfer a Pakistani spy from a remote town in Maharashtra to a Mumbai jail. The film was later remade in Telugu as Satyameva Jeyate (2009).
Without revealing much about the sequel Areyman who is currently promoting his upcoming production venture, Pagalpan Next Level, said, “It’s a fresh script which is set in the current time and will also have a continuation from the original film.”
Talking about the casting, he added, “My family is close to Akshay sir, but unfortunately his character dies in the first part so we can’t feature him. Ajay sir (Ajay Devgn) and Aishwarya’s character also die in the film. I will be initiating talks with Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan) as soon as I have a proper script in place. I would also love to have Tusshar Kapoor continue his character in the film. Along with them, we will have a fresh casting. I have had a word with Rajkumar Santoshji and would only want him to direct the sequel.”
Khakee was released in January 2004, during the Republic Day weekend, and was a commercial and critical success. The film earned around Rs 50 crore at the box office and went on to become the 5th highest-grossing film of the year.
