Renowned poet Inderjeet alias Imroz passed away at his residence in Mumbai’s Kandivali on Friday. The 97-year-old artist, who came into the limelight for his relationship with Punjab’s beloved poetess, Amrita Pritam, was suffering from age-related issues.

According to an Indian Express report, Amiya Kunwar, a close acquaintance of Imroz and a poetess, confirmed his demise saying he was suffering from health issues for some days and had been hospitalised.

“He was taking food through a pipe. But never for a day did he forget Amrita. He would hate it if someone would talk of her in the past tense. He would say ‘Amrita hai, yahin hai’. Imroz might have left the physical world today but he has only joined Amrita up in the heavens and their love story is not the one that would die with their physical passing. It would only get more beautiful for the world to remember,” Kunwar was quoted by Indian Express as saying.

Even after she died in 2005, Imroz never spoke about her as someone dead but insisted she was still around. Imroz and Amrita lived together for about 40 years but never got married.

Who is Inderjeet alias Imroz?

Originally named Inderjeet, poet Imroz was born on January 26, 1926, at Chak number 36 in Lyallpur of undivided Punjab. He was an artist who joined Amrita in 1966 when she started publishing her magazine ‘Naagmani’. He worked with her as an artist/illustrator.

It was then he changed his name from Inderjeet to Imroz. Amrita used to lovingly call him ‘Jeet’.

He began writing poems after Amrita’s health deteriorated. Following her death, he wrote several poems dedicated to her.

He authored four poetry books, filled with poems dedicated to Amrita. ‘Jashan Jaari Hai’ (for which he won an award), ‘Manchaaha Hi Rishta’ and ‘Rang Tere Mere’ are some of the books written by Imroz.
