A 20-year-old girl, who was under training in the Navy for Agniveer, allegedly died by suicide by hanging herself, an official said on Tuesday.

As per the official, the girl, identified as Aparna V Nair, was under training at INS Hamla at the time of the incident. Malvani Police registered an accidental death report (ADR) and is carrying out further operations, Mumbai Police said.

Sources said that the girl was in a relationship which was facing troubles, adding that which is why she could have possibly taken the extreme step. She died by suicide by hanging herself with the help of a bedsheet, sources said.

After getting information about this incident, Navy doctors were called who examined the girl and declared her dead.

An official also said that while no suicide note was recovered from the spot, the girl appears to have taken the extreme step due to “personal reasons”. The girl had been training at the facility for the last 15 days after completing her basic training, he said.

Indian Navy issued a statement on the demise of the girl and said, “Regret to inform the unfortunate incident of unnatural death of Aparna V Nair, Agniveer Logistics(F&A), age 20, at INS Hamla, Mumbai on 27 Nov 23. An inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident. Indian Navy extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.”

Agniveers are soldiers recruited by the armed forces under the Agnipath scheme, which was introduced in 2022.
