Ranveer Singh Convinced Bhansali To Cast Deepika Padukone In Ram-Leela: 'Kareena Had To Exit...'
Not Deepika Padukone, but Kareena Kapoor was supposed to play the role of Leela in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ram-Leela.

Ranveer Singh made a series of interesting revelations on the first episode of Koffee With Karan Season 8, where he appeared along with his wife, actress Deepika Padukone. This marked the Bollywood power couple’s first ever joint interview on any chat show.

During their interaction with host Karan Johar, Ranveer revealed that Deepika Padukone was not the first choice for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram-Leela. “Ram-Leela was supposed to happen with myself and Kareena Kapoor in the lead. The set was ready. One week before roll, for some reason, Kareena had to exit the film,” Ranveer told Karan.

Ranveer further revealed that it was him who recommended Deepika’s name to Bhansali and his team after seeing her performance in Cocktail which was just released. “Then we were sitting and wondering who to cast. And Cocktail had just happened (released). So there was a discussion with Mr Bhansali, all the ADs and myself in the office, about who should we take. And I was batting for team Deepika, because I just saw Cocktail, and she got cast,” he said.

This was not the first time when Kareena missed an opportunity to work with Bhansali. The actress had once called the director out for removing her from Devdas. Apparently, Kareena was supposed to play Paro, which was eventually played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the movie. Kareena had revealed that she “was” hurt with Sanjay after he suddenly replaced her despite giving her a signing amount for the movie.

In a 2002 interview with Filmfare, Kareena was asked if she’d ever collaborate with Bhansali considering what happened between them. She said, “I’ll never. What he did to me was wrong. He screen-tested me for Devdas, gave me a signing amount, then took someone else. That was wrong, it hurt especially because I was at the start of my career. It’s okay, because the day he dropped me, I signed Yaadein. Sanjay hurt me. Even if I have no work, I’ll never work with him.”
