The prestigious Critics Choice Awards 2024 were hosted in Santa Monica, California, and it was indeed a star-studded affair. Some of the best performers took home the accolades, but it seems not everyone expected to have a winning night. This was the case with Ryan Gosling, who did not fathom that his piece could be awarded. The song I’m Just Ken by actor Ryan Gosling from the critically acclaimed movie Barbie won Best Song at the Critics Choice Awards 2024. Among others, the song has surpassed Billie Eilish What Was I Made For and Dua Lipa’s Dance the Night.
At the Critics Choice Awards, Ryan Gosling was completely taken off guard when I’m Just Ken was declared the winner in the Best Song category and his candid reaction had netizens in splits. After its announcement, the cameras cut to Ryan Gosling in the audience, who appeared perplexed. His reaction suggested that he felt it was a joke. The announcer then mentioned that writers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, as well as Ryan, would take the award, but the actor remained in the audience and cheered on for Mark and Andrew.
Commenting on the viral video, a user said, “Ryan Gosling’s reaction to I’m just ken” winning the best song at the Critics Choice Awards is EVERYTHING,” while another wrote, “HIS FACE. Just the best! I’m ridiculously happy for Ryan Gosling, who is SO deserving of accolades for his performance (musical or otherwise) as Ken in Barbie. Only HE could pull it ALL off, including the delightful heart and humor in “I’m Just Ken.”

The famed songwriter, Mark Ronson, praised Ryan Gosling’s contribution in bringing the song to life during his acceptance speech. He said, “Ryan Gosling, this award is yours as much as it is ours. You made the world, or the audience, fall in love with this song with your matchless performance, so thank you,” as quoted by Entertainment Tonight.
Meanwhile, I’m Just Ken is also nominated for the Oscars this year, and speculation was that Ryan Gosling would perform the song at the event. Speaking about the same, he told W Magazine, “Well, I haven’t been invited. And I wasn’t thinking about it until now, and now it’s all I’m going to think about.” Other songs from Barbie’s album are also nominated, such as Billie Eilish What Was I Made For and Dua Lipa’s Dance the Night.
