Vaibhavi Merchant, the granddaughter of choreographer B. Hiralal, started her solo career in 1999 with the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. She is an award-winning choreographer who has extensively worked in the Bollywood industry and been part of innumerable popular songs. She has also judged dance reality series like Nach Baliye, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, and Just Dance. This year has been splendid for the choreographer, working with some of the biggest stars in the industry.
As she celebrates her 48th birthday today on December 17, here are some of her award-winning and latest songs that she choreographed.
Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya
The latest dance track from the highly anticipated Atlee directorial, Jawan, has created a lot of buzz. The music video stars Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara, and other co-stars in the film. Choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant, the song was composed by Anirudh Ravichander with his vocals, along with Vishal Dadlani and Shilpa Rao.
Dhindora Baje Re
An upbeat number from Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani, starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh. The song was composed by Pritam, with Amitabh Bhattacharya’s lyrics and vocals by Darshan Raval and Bhoomi Trivedi. The catchy and powerful dance steps given by Vaibhavi Merchant mesmerised the audience.
Besharam Rang
The sassy number from Siddharth Anand’s Pathaan was the talk of the town upon release. Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s chemistry, along with the actress’ flawless moves, was absolutely spellbinding. Vaibhavi Merchant’s effort could be seen in each frame. Leke Prabhu Ka Naam
A groovy number from Salman Khan’s latest release, Tiger 3 features the actor along with Katrina Kaif. The song was composed by Pritam, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya and vocals by Arijit Singh, Nikhita Gandhi. The peepy number has been around on social media since its release and is favourite among fans.
Dholi Taro Dhol Baaje
The song from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is remembered not only as a festive number but also for its excellent choreography carried out by Vaibhavi Merchant. The song was effortlessly performed by Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan. Vaibhavi received the National Film Award for Best Choreography in the year 2000 for the song.
Kajra Re
A sensational dance number from Bunty Aur Babli. It featured Aishwarya Rai along with Abhishek Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan. Vaibhavi won several awards for the song including the IIFA Award for Best Choreography, Zee Cine Award for Best Choreography in the year 2006.
