Captain's Knock From Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav's Gritty 49 Propel India to 229/9 Against England
Rohit Sharma smashed 87 runs, Suryakumar Yadav scored 49 as India fight their way to 229/9 after an early collapse against England in ODI World Cup 2023.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma led from the front but narrowly missed a century as India recorded a total of 229/9 in fifty overs against England at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday.

Rohit scored 87 in 101 balls, missing a century by just 13 runs, while Suryakumar Yadav also added 49 in 47 balls on a tough surface. It was the second fifty from Rohit in the ODI World Cup 2023 as India were invited to bat first for the first time in the tournament.

England captain Jos Buttler had earlier won the toss, and elected to bowl first, and his bowlers duly delivered on the skipper’s call. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill got off to a shaky start as Gill was dismissed by Chris Woakes after scoring 9 runs. The youngster was castled and Virat Kohli joined Rohit.

The pitch was offering plenty of grip and turn that assisted the bowlers, and pressure was building on Indian batters. Kohli played eight dot balls and lost his patience trying to get off the mark as he handed away his wicket against David Willey.

The England pacer’s short-pitch delivery got Kohli to mistime his shot and Ben Stokes was stationed at mid-off as the all-rounder took an easy catch. Thus, Kohli registered his first career duck in World Cups (ODI and T20) after 56 innings.

Shreyas Iyer’s turmoil against short balls continued as he fell prey to Woakes, managing just four runs, before Rohit and KL Rahul joined hands to steady the ship.

India vs England Live Score Updates

The 91-run partnership for the fourth wicket took India from 40/3 to beyond the 100-run mark. While the Indian captain scored a fifty, Rahul ended up scoring 39 runs in 58 balls before a reckless shot against Willey gave the England pacer his second wicket of the day.

Rohit continued to pierce the field set by Buttler as he neared his century, but the 36-year-old erred against Adil Rashid, a mistimed shot from the ‘Hitman’ gave away a catch to Liam Livingstone who dived full length to take a catch injuring his knee in the process.

The Indian captain’s wicket came as a major blow to the hosts, as Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja looked for a flourishing finish. Jadeja was dismissed LBW by Rashid, while Mohammed Shami handed away a catch to Jos Buttler as the lower order crumbled.

Surya continued to trouble the England bowlers with his trickery of shots all over the park, but he perished on 49, shortly after India crossed the 200-run mark. Jasprit Bumrah slammed a boundary against Mark Wood on a 149.7kmph delivery which drew a huge cheer from the crowd. Shortly afterwards he was dropped by Moeen Ali, and he scored 16 runs, while Kuldeep Yadav scored 9 to fight until the end of the fifty overs.

England need 230 runs to end India’s unbeaten streak at the ODI World Cup so far after five games.
