Officials said that the incident took place at Outer Ring Road towards Sarai Kale Khan. They had recently killed Baljinder Singh Balli (45), a local Congress leader in Punjab’s Moga district, and had been on the run since.
Balli, who was also locally known as ‘namberdar’, was shot twice. While one bullet pierced his chest, the other hit his thigh.
Balli was the block president of Ajitwal village for the Congress party. Police said that two assailants came on a bike. While one entered the house, the other kept waiting outside.
Hours after the incident, fugitive gangster Arshdeep Singh Gill alias Arsh Dala, also a native of Dala village but believed to be hiding in Canada, took to Facebook and claimed responsibility for the killing.
A few days ago, Mohali police had arrested Mandeep Singh, alias Deepa, of Ajitwal, Moga; and Saurav Kumar, alias Saabi of Ludhiana. Both are associates of Dala.
The duo was wanted by the Ludhiana and Moga police in multiple criminal cases and had also been declared proclaimed offenders by the respective local courts.
A report by Hindustan Times quoted police as saying they received secret information that the accused were roaming in Kharar and looking for a chance to threaten a local businessman to extort Rs 40 lakh.
According to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Dala gang is engaged in smuggling of arms, ammunition and explosives for the KTF from across the border.
Dala has been guiding and commissioning terrorist acts and also promoting terror, violence and large-scale extortion in India on behalf of the KTF, the HT report stated.
