‘Most Important Goal is to Win World Cup’: ‘Focused’ Shubman Gill Ready for the Showpiece ICC Event
Shubman Gill said that his most important goal at the moment is to win the ODI World Cup for India.

Young India batting sensation Shubman Gill said that winning the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup is the most important goal for him at the moment. Gill has been selected for India’s squad and he will be playing his first white-ball ICC event. The talented batter has been in terrific form this year in ODIs and is currently ranked 3 in the latest ICC rankings.

Shubman will open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma in the mega ICC event. The opening pair has worked well for India in the 50-over format this year as the selectors preferred Gill over Shikhar Dhawan as they decided to enter the transition phase after last year’s T20 World Cup as few senior players were shown the exit door.

Gill revealed what will be his mindset to achieve his most important goal.

“The most important goal for me as a player right now is to win World Cup 2023. I recall being young when India won the World Cup in 2011. The mindset is to swiftly read the wicket and access the positions,” Gill was quoted as saying by Disney+ Hotstar.

The 23-year-old further talked about how important is for a player to adapt quickly and revealed that the mindset plays in it.

“As a batsman, it is critical to quickly access to the position and understand the speed. So the planning and play are all based on that. Mindset plays an important role as one has to switch mentally, like from an ODI mentality to a T20 one. The faster you switch, the faster your body adapts; thus, I believe being able to mentally switch is important,” he concluded.

Gill has scored 885 runs in 15 ODIs this year at a sublime average of 68.07. He is touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket as the team management also backs him as a three-format player. He is one of the few players who played in all three formats for India thus far in 2023.

He had a rusty start to the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 as he was dismissed for just 10 in the group stage clash against Pakistan. However, the 23-year-old bounced back and scored back-to-back half-centuries. He looked in sublime touch during the Super 4 clash against Pakistan and scored 58 runs.
