Usama Mir Comes in as Concussion Substitute for Shadab Khan During PAK vs SA ODI World Cup Match

Pakistan legspinner Usama Mir has become part of history after coming in as the first ever concussion substitute during an ICC ODI World Cup match.

During Pakistan’s world cup contest against South Africa in Chennai, Usama replaced allrounder Shadab Khan who walked off the field after banging his head on the turf while fielding in the first over of second innings at the MA Chidambram Stadium.

Shadab hurt himself while trying to throw the ball and he was lying still on the field as the Pakistan team physio tended to him. A stretcher was called in before Shadab ambled off the field.

“Pakistan have taken a concussion substitute for Shadab Khan in the ongoing match against South Africa. Usama Mir will replace Shadab,” Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“Shadab hit his head while fielding. He briefly took the field, but after a thorough assessment, the Pakistan team medical panel decided to replace him. The substitute request was approved by the match referee,” the post read.

Shadab did return to the field for a while but left in the 15th over as he wasn’t able to continue.

Usama is eligible to bowl full quota of 10 overs as concussion sub.

Shadab had earlier played a handy innings of 46 off 36 to help Pakistan recover from middle-over slump and post a decent 270-all out against South Africa after captain Babar Azam opted to bat first.

Mir landed a blow in his very first over of the South Africa chase when he trapped Rassie van der Dussen LBW on 21.
