New Delhi: The Budget session of Parliament could conclude on March 25, a month ahead of schedule, due to assembly elections in five states.

A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is scheduled tomorrow when a decision on the issue is expected, government sources said.

A senior minister said demands have been made by several parties, including the Left, DMK, AIADMK and Trinamool Congress, to cut short the session so that they could devote full time for the polls.

As per the earlier plans, the first phase of the Budget session was to end on March 16 and the second phase was to be held from April four till 21.

The two options before the Government were either to have a longer monsoon session or to have a second phase of the budget session after the assembly polls in May/June.

As per present indications, the Budget session would be adjourned sine die on March 25 but not prorogued, thereby keeping it alive in the event of a decision to have a second phase.

In view of the plans for curtailment, the Lok Sabha will not take up the private members' business on Friday and would sit late for a discussion on the Railway Budget, sources said.

The polling process in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry starts from April 4 and ends on May 10. The results for all the five states will be announced on May 13.
