Bees bug Mayawati; UP cops get ready to sting
Police file case, say bee invasion could have caused stampede.

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh police have filed an FIR against unknown persons whom they accuse of disturbing Chief Minister Mayawati's rally in Lucknow with bees.

Rajeev Krishna, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in Lucknow, told CNN-IBN lakhs of bees invaded the Bahujan Samajwadi Party's (BSP) rally and the incident was serious because it could have led to a stampede.

“There were hundreds and thousands of bees in the rally ground. It is a serious matter, because it could have led to a stampede had the bees attacked the crowd.,” said Krishna.

"I have investigated the scene of fire. The extent of spread fire leads us to believe that there is a strong possibility that it was deliberately put on by someone. Taking all these things into consideration, we have filed a case in this matter."

Krishna said the police had taken the opinion of horticulture specialists to find out what cause the bees to invade the rally. He refused to comment whether he suspected a conspiracy and denied that two persons had been detained for the bee invasion. "Let the investigations get over," he said.

Police estimate that around 1.5 lakh bees invaded the rally.

Mayawati was speaking at the rally to celebrate BSP's twenty-fifth anniversary at the Rama Bai Ambedkar Maidan in Lucknow when bees made a sudden appearance and made a hive on the stage.

Unperturbed, Mayawati continued her speech and said: "it's a matter of happiness and satisfaction that none of these bees have stung any of the BSP party workers. These bees are felicitating us all in our honour."

The UP government quickly ordered an inquiry. "Someone disturbed honey bees at the nearby central school building by lighting a fire below the hive, following which they hovered over the Rama Bai Ambedkar maidan for about an hour," an official release said in Lucknow on Monday.

The BSP alleges the bees were disturbed when someone fire to bushes in a school near the rally. "When Mayawati was addressing a rally at the Ramabai Ambedkar Maidan, someone set fire to some bushes in a nearby compound of the Kendriya Vidyalaya and that set alight the bees from the beehive. These bees then moved rapidly towards the stage and wandered around the Chief Minister for at least an hour. After which they formed a beehive on top of the stage. Without fear, the CM went ahead with her speech so that the rally doesn't get disrupted. But an inquiry is being conducted to find out who has done this."

The BSP has already been criticized presenting a cash garland worth crores to Mayawati at the rally but insists that the money came from the donation of its workers and supporters.
