The BSP candidate won over the SP candidate by a margin of 5,000 votes.
Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party on Sunday won a key Uttar Pradesh by-election after defeating a ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate in a straight contest by a margin of more than 5,000 votes.
Samajwadi Party candidate Madhubala Pasi sprung a surprise by defeating Amar Singh Saroj in the election.
The BSP loss comes even as Chief Minister Mayawati's most trusted Muslim lieutenant and cabinet colleague Naseemuddin Siddiqui had camped there for almost a month making untiring efforts to woo the large local Muslim electorate number.
The BSP's Brahmin mascot Satish Chandra Misra also campaigned heavily for the party in Bhadohi.
