Kanpur: Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday accused the Centre of not allotting "sufficient" funds for Uttar Pradesh, even though BJP has won a majority of Lok Sabha seats in the state.
"The Centre has not allotted the state sufficient funds for development projects and works despite the BJP having a majority of Lok Sabha seats in the state," he said after laying the foundation stone of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project here.
He along with Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu launched work for the first phase (from IIT-Kanpur to Naubasta) of the 32-km-long project in the city.
The project is estimated to cost Rs 17,092 crore.
"Metro rail was never in our election manifesto. However, to make cities smart the government decided to have metro rails at Kanpur and Lucknow," Yadav said.
Assuring the Chief Minister that the Centre will complete all development works the state government "recommends", Naidu said, "There can be all-round and complete development of Uttar Pradesh if the state and Centre work together. The Prime Minister believes that the country can only develop if the states develop."
"Kanpur has been known as an industrial city. The Centre now plans to make it a knowledge hub. The Centre and the state will make Kanpur a Smart City," Naidu said, adding Kanpur would soon get a power project and a ESI Hospital.
Mentioning the Samajwadi Party's free smart phone scheme, Yadav said, "The government wants the state's cities and people to be smart. Our efforts show with Kanpur being selected as a Smart City and our initiative of free laptop to students."
