Congress divided on retirement age in politics
Dwivedi's comments hold significance in the sense that the BJP had recently dropped off its veteran leaders from the party's parliamentary board in order to give key positions to comparatively younger politicians.

New Delhi: Congress seems to be a divided house on the issue of retirement age in politics. A day after senior party leader Janardhan Dwivedi suggested that politicians must retire from active politics post the age of 70, Congress spokesperson Abishek Manu Singhvi criticised the statement saying that these were not party's official statement.

"Janardhan Dwivedi's statement is not party's view," asserted Singhvi.

While Singhvi opposed the idea of retirement at 70, senior leader and party general secretary Digvijaya Singh said that more young blood should be brought into the party and given key positions. "Congress has always given opportunities to the youth. I have always felt this way. This is succession management. I had earlier said that Congress supports young people. Jawaharlal Nehru became the AICC President at the age of 38. We have always encouraged youth in party structure," said Singh.

"At the same time we should open up our organisation at every level. We have organizational elections next year. It can happen in the next shake up. In the next election we should have a new crop of leaders," he added.

Dwivedi had on Thursday sparked off a debate with his comments where in he had said, "The generational change is also essential in politics. In active politics, youth should be given preference. You can have an age limit of 65 or 70, whatever you feel is right," he said.

Dwivedi's comments hold significance in the sense that the BJP had recently dropped off its veteran leaders from the party's parliamentary board in order to give key positions to comparatively younger politicians.
