New Delhi: Would Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi be a better Prime Ministerial choice for the BJP than L K Advani?
Top honchos of India Inc seem to think so. First it was Ratan Tata and now its Anil Ambani and Sunil Bharti MIttal coming out in support of Gujarat Chief Minister.
Speaking at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit, the tycoons said that in Modi they see a leader who could lead the nation to prosperity in the decades to come.
“If Narendra Modi can lead a state so well, just imagine how well will he lead the country,” Ambani said.
Mittal echoed the sentiment. “We run big companies but if there is one man who can run the whole state and the nation then he is Narendra Modi,” he said.
BJP appeared smug at the development. Party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said India Inc's choice is a vindication of Modi's positive leadership.
“Choice for Narendra Modi is in itself a vindication of the positive leadership we have at state level. An outstanding CM like Modi is acknowledged by the world community. So it is a positive and desirable action and it is the vision of the BJP for the future. Governance is the key to BJP ruled state and is reflected par excellence in Gujarat,” he said.
But Congress appeared skeptical. Party spokesperson Manish Tewari said India Inc’s opinion did not reflect on India’s opinion. “Let me reject this outright. A country which is inherently liberal is not going to accept somebody like Modi. Way back in 1933, the German industry also had a fascination for another fascist leader, Adolf Hitler. He led not only Germany but the whole world to disaster,” he said, adding, “My advice to the captains of Indian industry is not to get carried away by his leadership in the age of Satyam. A country like India which is liberal cannot accept a fascist”.
