Tarigami demanded increase in the wages under MGNREGA as well as doubling the work days from 100 to 200.

Jammu: CPI(M) in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday asked the state government to lay more emphasis on restructuring of rural development sector in the planning process.

Participating in the debate on demands for grants for the departments of Rural Development, Law and Parliamentary Affairs, CPI(M) state Secretary Mohd Yousuf Tarigami said restructuring the rural economy was imperative for socio-economic emancipation of the masses in the state.

He demanded MGNREGA be brought under the Minimum Wages Act and said that without this provision the whole programme becomes unconstitutional as it is not in harmony with the provision of the constitution, which guarantees equal wages for equal work.

Tarigami demanded increase in the wages under MGNREGA as well as doubling the work days from 100 to 200. Referring to corruption, he urged the government to strengthen the Accountability Commission and Vigilance Organization so that corruption could be checked effectively.

Tarigami advocated setting up of State Judicial Commission so that the doubts regarding corruption in the state judiciary could be set at rest and grievances addressed.

He also proposed constitution of State Law Commission which could review and revise obsolete laws and rules.

Tarigami also called for constitutional empowerments of panchayats and sought regularization of daily wagers working in Rural Development Department.

He also demanded pending wages of daily wagers be released at the earliest possible.
