New Delhi: It's an all-out war between the Delhi Police and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government after the brutal murder of a 19-year-old girl in the national capital who was stabbed 35 times for raising objection to sexual assault.
Ahead of his meeting with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi said he is accountable only to the Parliament and not to a political party. Bassi will be briefing the CM on the progress report of the case.
"Delhi Police is accountable to Indian Parliament. FIR is investigated as per the law not by my wish," he said after meeting Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.
Bassi has said that he will try to dispel "misconceptions" about functioning of his force in his meeting with the Chief Minister. He is likely to explain the CM about the steps being taken to improve the law and order situation in the national capital.
Though he refused to comment on Kejriwal's recent statement in which he referred to Delhi policemen as "thulla". "This a personal choice so I will not make any comment but use of such word is a offence but uncognisable offense that's why we will not register any case against him. I would not like to advice anyone on their views," he said.
Bassi has said that there is no need for implementing AAP's demand for bringing Delhi Police under the city government. Currently Delhi Police functions directly under administrative control of the Home Ministry.
"The mechanism at present is appropriate. This was no knee-jerk reaction when the G D Khosla Committee introduced the commissionerate in Delhi, after deliberation and examination of witnesses, the Parliament Act of 1978 was formed. Any attempt to tinker with the mechanism will be injustice to Delhi residents and can be dangerous," he said.
Meanwhile, Kejriwal has hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying he should either devote more time to look into the law and order situation in the capital or hand over charge of the Delhi Police to the state government. Keeping up his tirade against the Centre on functioning of Delhi Police, Kejriwal urged Modi to look into his demand seriously, alleging that law and order situation in the capital was "on a decline".
"I request Prime Minister Narendra Modi with folded hands that the control of Delhi Police be handed over to us. He has to run the complete country. I am not saying Delhi Police officials are wrong. They are very good people and are working but the system is bad. Even Police officials themselves are frustrated with this and no improvement is happening," he claimed.
The issue of control over the Delhi Police has been brought into focus yet again after nineteen-year-old Minakshi was brutally stabbed to death allegedly by two brothers living in her neighbourhood in central Delhi's Anand Parbat area for protesting their verbally abusing her on July 16.
AAP has been at loggerheads with Delhi Police over a number of issues and the party has stepped up its attack against it after arrest of two of its MLAs. It has been accusing Delhi Police of "bias" against it, saying, its MLAs are being "targeted" under political pressure.
