Chandigarh: Punjab's ruling Shiromani Akali Dal on Wednesday accused the Election Commission of acting on "direct commands" of Congress to "vilify" SAD and its leaders through a raid conducted at the house of an Akali Dal candidate, a confidante of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, in Muktsar district.
A SAD press release in Chandigarh this evening said the raid conducted jointly by the IT department and the Election Commission officials yielded nothing and "has exposed the conspiracy under which the Commission and Congress are trying desperately to influence the poll process".
"The Chief Electoral Officer is implementing the manifesto of Congress which has always opposed Badal's welfare policies for Dalits, the poor and farmers," said the release.
"We are fighting an election not only against Congress but also against the brazenly biased Election Commission. It is like playing a match in which you are fighting not only against your rivals but also the referee", the party said.
"But we will register a thumping win in the elections and Congress and the EC will have eggs on their faces", it added.
The SAD asked the Chief Electoral Commissioner to clarify whether it still thought its officials were not functioning under orders of Congress leaders and whether or not such an action brought disrepute to an august body like the EC.
The party also alleged the decision of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to ban the supply of 'atta daal' to poor families under the ongoing government scheme was taken at the behest of Congress.
