Churchill Alemao says he will now contest as an Independent from South Goa.

In yet another blow to the Congress, senior Goa leader Churchill Alemao quit the party on Saturday and announced that he would contest the Lok Sabha elections as an Independent from South Goa.

"I have sent my resignation letter today morning. I will now contest as an Independent. I had given party enough time to reconsider their candidate for South Goa."

Congress has fielded Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco from South Goa while the party has named Ravi Naik from North Goa. The state has only two Lok Sabha seats. Voting in the state will take place in the fifth phase on April 17 and counting is on May 16.

In the last few week the Congress has seen several leaders quitting the party with most of them joining the BJP which along with its allies is seen as the frontrunner to win the Lok Sabha elections and form the next government at the Centre.
