New Delhi: The Left Front, as was expected, has slammed the UPA Government furiously over the proposed fuel hikes and have declared their intention to go hold a general strike.
CPI-M leader Dipankar Mukherjee insisted that there was no justification for the fuel hike, a line the Left had been taking since several weeks. The stance was corroborated by CPI-M General Secretary, Prakash Karat.
"There is no justification for this steep fuel price hike," Karat said. "This is not a marginal hike, this is a substantial hike."
Speaking to the Press, both Mukherjee and Karat were unanimous in blaming the Government for discounting their inputs on the matter.
Karat pointed out that the Government had not acceded to any of the Left proposals except for a marginal cut in duties.
Dipankar Mukherjee added, "We have given a number of figures to them, but people are not interested in the figures, people are interested in results!"
"This is a suicidal step for the Government," he asserted.
The Left is all to go on strike on Thursday to protest the fuel hikes.
"Private companies are earning profits, one earned 19,000 crores, why aren't they being taxed? Why is the common man being taxd?" demanded Mukherjee. "Why are you charging the consumer? Why aren't you charging the producer?"
The Left will hold nation-wide protests from Thursday and has declared its intention of holding Bandhs from 5-11 June.
