Kolkata: Nirupam Sen, veteran Marxist leader and commerce and industries minister in the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government, passed away in Kolkata early on Monday. He was 72.
Sen, who was also a former Politburo member, had been suffering from kidney ailments for the last two years and had survived a cerebral attack in 2013. He succumbed to multi-organ failure at a private hospital in Salt Lake.
Sen was elected to the Bengal state Assembly in 2001 and 2006 from the Burdwan South seat, which he lost to the Trinamool Congress in 2011.
Sen was considered to be the chief architect of the industrial reform drive in Bengal during the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee regime and was considered No.2 in the cabinet after Bhattacharjee.
He was considered to be the prime mover of the industrial drives in Singur and Nandigram, which turned out to be the Achilles’ Heel of the Left Front government in Bengal.
Sen also spearheaded several industrial disinvestment projects in the state during his tenure as minister, in sharp contrast to the previous Left industrial policy in Bengal.
Sen, alongside Bhattacharjee, quit the Politburo during the party’s Vishakapatanam Congress in 2015 and subsequently stepped down from other key positions of the party earlier this year on account of advanced age and physical ailments.
