Pinarayi Vijayan Likely To Be The Next Kerala CM

Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Pinarayi Vijayan has been chosen as the Chief Ministerial candidate in Kerala. The decision was made at the state secretariat meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, a day after the Left Democratic Front stormed back to power in the state.

Marxist Veteran VS Achuthanandan, who spearheaded the LDF campaign, was also present in the meeting where the decision was taken. The party has still not made any final decision on how to accommodate the 93-year-old Achuthanandan.

Vijayan started as a student union leader and even faced imprisonment for his activism. He served as secretary of CPM Kerala State Committee between 1998 and 2015.

He was removed from CPM Politburo following his public spat with Achuthanandan in 2007. While he was reinstated in the Politburo, Achuthanandan remained suspended.

The CPM-led LDF returned to power in Kerala dealing a huge blow to the ruling Congress-led UDF. In the 140-member assembly, LDF won 91 seats, UDF 47, BJP and Independents, one each.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy submitted his resignation early on Friday morning. He admitted that the poll outcome was a "setback" and the Congress had not expected such a big defeat.
