Mumbai: While the opposition continued to create uproar over Lalit gate and other issues in Parliament, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday visited the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) amid ongoing protests against appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as chairperson.

During an interaction with the protesting students, the Congress leader accused the BJP of promoting mediocrity by people like Gajendra Chauhan as the chairperson. He went on to say that there is increased interference in all educational institutions, adding that the government is "systematically promoting RSS ideology".

"Their ideology is promoting mediocrity. We are watching them in Parliament and there is no say in the party. It is not like the Congress where people can voice their concerns," said Rahul.

"BJP is one-man party. If PM Modi chose Gajendra Chauhan, no one in the party will ever say no even if they don’t agree on his appointment," he added.

The Congress vice president visited the premier film institute and met students to show solidarity to their protest against Chauhan’s appointment. He was accompanied by actor-turned-politicians Raj Babbar and Chiranjeevi, both members of the Congress party.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), meanwhile, continued to back Chauhan. Party leader Paresh Rawal hit back at Rahul Gandhi, saying, "If FTII students see a party worker in Gajendra Chauhan, what filmmaker do they see in Rahul Gandhi?"

This came even as members of the BJP staged protests outside the FTII campus over the Gandhi scion's visit to the campus.

The students have been on strike for nearly two months, protesting against the appointment of Chauhan as the institute's chairman.

Several big names from the Indian film industry, including Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and Anupan Kher, have backed the students in their protest, saying Chauhan must step down as the chairperson.
