Nagaur (Rajasthan): The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Sunday disapproved of reservation demands by the "affluent" sections, in a veiled reference to agitations by Jats, Patels and Kapus.
Akhil Bhariya Pratinidhi Sabha, the top decision-making body of the RSS, also favoured a study to ascertain whether deserving backward classes were actually getting quota benefits.
Addressing a press conference after their conclave in Nagaur, RSS general secretary Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi said it should be kept in mind that reservation provisions made by Bhimrao Ambedkar were for social justice.
"It is felt that this thinking (demand by affluent class) is not in the right direction. People of such (affluent) class should give up their right and should help the weaker section of the society. But instead of that, they are demanding reservation for themselves which is not a thinking in the right direction," he said.
This categorical stand by the Sangh fountainhead has political ramifications as the BJP government in Haryana has already committed itself on Jat quota after the recent unrest. It could also have ripple effects in adjoining western UP where assembly polls will be held next year
The Patel quota stir has already disrupted BJP' cosy caste chemistry is Gujarat. And in Andhra Pradesh, where the BJP is an ally of the ruling TDP, Kapus are seeking OBC quota.
The RSS top decision making body which met for three days in a pavilion named after Dr Ambedkar resolved to root out untouchability.
"Caste-based discrimination is a matter of concern for all of us and members of the Hindu community are responsible for it. But now we need to eradicate it. A message for this should be conveyed in the society so that there is no discrimination, atrocities against anyone and social harmony should be maintained," Joshi said.
