Bhopal: Former union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Friday said that his 72-hour Satyagraha for farmers would culminate in the form of a Kisan Mahapanchayat on June 17 but the struggle initiated by the party would continue in the interest of farmers.
Talking to reporters at the state’s Congress Committee office, Scindia, who was accompanied by senior leaders, said the party would carry on the struggle at every block, at every village.
He had started his 72-hour fast in response to Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s one-day 'peace fast' at Dussehra Maidan in Bhopal.
“I have raised farmers’ issues in the parliament in the past and would continue to do so in future as well,” he said.
The Scindia family scion however fended off queries when asked about his ambitions for the post of chief minister after the next assembly elections in the state, saying it was up to the party leadership to decide.
When questioned on videos that recently went viral showing party MLAs Jitu Patwari and Shakuntala Khatik, inciting violence, Scindia claimed that no Congress worker was involved in violence.
Instead, he blamed the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government for the violent protests in Malwa and Mandsaur.
He hurled a volley of questions at the MP government, asking why nine farmers had ended their lives in last six days, and why lakhs of people are forced to migrate from Madhya Pradesh every year.
The Guna MP said farmers were incurring losses because the state government increased prices for agri-productivity but lowered the prices for farm products. “They deserve Krishi Jadugari award and not the Krishi Karman award,” he said.
On the arrest of farmer leader Shivkumar Sharma ‘Kakkaji’, the man who is held responsible for the protests turning violent, Scindia said the government was stifling voices of dissent.
Attacking Modi government, Scindia alleged that central government failed to start a single new scheme in last three years and just renamed Congress schemes.
Scindia also slammed Chouhan for his fast, saying, “In Hindu culture, we visit homes of those who lose any family member but for CM’s fast, the kin of those killed in Mandsaur were brought to Bhopal.”
He also alleged several anomalies in implementation of GST, claiming that traders will have to suffer once the new tax regime comes into force.
