The Tamil Nadu sports minister and son of chief minister MK Stalin, Udhayanidhi Stalin, is likely to become deputy CM in the first week of August as per senior leaders from the DMK.
“Udhayanidhi will be made deputy CM before honourable CM leaves for the US. Contemplation is on whether he should be made deputy chief minister before or after Independence Day. The discussion right now is to aim for the first week of August,” said a senior minister on the condition of anonymity.
Chief minister MK Stalin will be leaving for the United States on August 22 and another senior leader confirmed that Udhayanidhi will be elevated before the CM goes abroad.
“Udhayanidhi will then start focusing on the 2026 state assembly polls. He played a key role in the party’s 2024 Lok Sabha campaigns and helped the party sweep the polls. So his elevation will help the party sweep the assembly elections as well,” the senior leader said.
Udhayanidhi takes over at a time when the DMK’s political popularity is somewhat under question, with recent challenges including a hooch tragedy that led to the deaths of over 60 people.
He himself has been the proponent of abolishing NEET, a promise that is hanging fire.
However, Udhayanidhi does not face any internal challenge in the takeover, with senior party leaders apparently in agreement.
In the coming months, he will also play a very crucial role in formulating DMK’s political strategy ahead of the crucial assembly elections of 2026.
