Clarification: According to clarification Sonia Gandhi is leaving for the US to undergo abdominal surgery. Earlier, reports claimed that Congress General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi had confirmed that Sonia had undergone surgery. But Dwivedi later clarified that Sonia's surgery is yet to take place.
New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi will undergone surgery in the US. She will be in the US for two to three weeks following the same.
Congress General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi confirmed this.
"On the advise of her doctors, she has travelled abroad and she is likely to be away for two to three weeks," Dwivedi said.
Sonia has constituted a group comprising AK Antony, Rahul Gandhi, Ahmed Patel and Janardhan Dwivedi to look after Congress party affairs in her absence.
"The group will take care of the party in my absence," Sonia said in a statement.
Party sources had said on July 31 that Sonia was down with viral fever.
Because of her illness, Sonia could not attend meeting of the Congress Core Group as also that of the Parliamentary Strategy Committee, they had said.
One of the first political reactions on Sonia's surgery came from Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
Modi tweeted, "Have come to know through media about Mrs Sonia Gandhi's surgery. I pray for her speedy recovery and good health."
