New Delhi: In order to appease the people of Tamil Nadu, the government has decided to distribute 30 lakh colour TV sets free of cost.
This will take place during the third phase of the scheme beginning from December 2007. This was announced by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Monday.
Presiding over a conference of Collectors and police officials in Chennai, he said that the government had provided 14,62,179 colour TV sets till July 15. All families without a colour TV would be given one by the state government.
He also said that the DMK government had fulfilled 107 out of 177 electoral promises so far.
Expressing satisfaction at the law and order situation Karunanidhi requested police officials to face the challenge of cyber crimes.
His government would provide all equipment and facilities necessary for the purpose, the Chief Minister said.
He requested the officials to monitor whether assistance meant for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees was reaching them properly and to provide basic amenities at refugee camps.
The Chief Minister also asked the officials to monitor the quality of rice under the Rs two per kg rice scheme and control the prices of essential commodities in the market.
He asked officials to intensify micro irrigation methods since the state faced shortage of water for agriculture and to ensure that farmers got crop loans as and when needed.
"All welfare measures, including the marriage assistance scheme, should be monitored so that the needy are benefited," he added.
