Mathura: Lady luck was smiling on BJP in the Uttar Pradesh civic polls, certainly so in Ward no.56 in Mathura. Both the candidates BJP and Congress candidates polled the same number of votes — 874.

Since it was a tie, the election officials decided the winner through a lucky draw. BJP’s Meera Agarwal was declared winner after the draw. The names of both the candidates were written on chits and put inside a box. A local boy was called in from the crowd around to pick a chit.

Such a lucky draw has happened before in Meghalaya in 2014 when both the candidates polled the same number of votes.

The BJP has won 11 mayoral seats and is ahead in three in the Uttar Pradesh municipal elections. The BSP has won one seat and is leading in another.

While the BJP seems to be heading for a big win, the seems to be on arevival path after poor performance in the UP Assemby elections. BSP is leading in three of the 16 mayoral seats. This is the first time Mayawati has contested the urban civic polls on the party symbol.

BSP seems to be picking up votes in areas with substantial Dalit population in western UP and Bundelkhand region.

The counting was going on for 16 nagar nigam, 198 nagar palika parishad and 438 nagar panchayats
